Up and down the country at sporting events, this year’s Remembrance Sunday is highlighting a significant milestone, but with City’s home fixture next Saturday now postponed, and no home fixture scheduled until early December, the 100th anniversary of the end of The Great War may well go unmarked at a match at Marsh Lane or in a matchday programme. So perhaps here, on the Forum, might be a suitable place to remember November 11th 1918, and the events of the four years that preceded it.
Oxford City FC was no different from any other group of people at the time in seeing most of its members involved, in one way or another, in that conflict. And, in common with any other group, some of its members did not return.
In fact eleven men who had played for Oxford City were killed during World War I. They were:
Cyril Samuel Benson (7 appearances; 5 goals)
Guy Richard Worstenholme Dickinson (190 appearances; 133 goals)
Bertram Thomas Honeysett (36 appearances; 4 goals)
Charles Lakin (no 1st XI matches, but a 2nd XI regular)
Bertram Frith Packer (8 appearances; 8 goals)
Leigh Richmond Roose (2 appearances (in goal))
Heber Percy Slatter (72 appearances; 7 goals)
H.G. Smith (91 appearances; 19 goals)
H.W. Stevens (61 appearances (in goal))
Harold George Tabernacle (59 appearances; 57 goals)
Walter Henry Wicks (4 appearances)
If anyone knows of any others I would be very grateful if they could be added to the list.
