Matches between these two recently have all been close and entertaining, and today's was no exception.
Billericay, a good side with many experienced ex-league players including a couple from United, came with the wrong colours, forcing City to play in their away strip, and for the first twenty minutes, City did look like the away side. With no Ashby, Moore-Azille, Brown or Wiltshire in the starting XI it took a little while for the team to gel and by that time we were two goals down. The first was a bit fortunate for Ricay with the ricochet landing kindly, but Jake Robinson took it well. He was a handful in the first half and his second goal showed his poaching quality, but the linesman must have been the only person in that part of the ground who couldn't see he was offside when the ball was crossed. Although City were unlucky to be two down it seemed a familiar situation this season.
Zac's brilliant volleyed strike was as good a goal as we've seen all season and it lifted the players. From then on it was a more even game with chances and good saves at both ends, as well as a good penalty shout at each end. At least the ref was consistent in waving both away. City might have made more of their chances but at times they are reluctant to pull the trigger. That was the case again with Craig Fasanmade, who apart from that had a really good game, running tirelessly all afternoon. At least he kept the ball and set up Jack Self for the equaliser; Jack was another who put in a fine shift today, but so did many others, and we got bodies behind the ball when under pressure at times near the end. So City will be more pleased with the point than their opponents.
However, the injury list grows longer each week. Both Eddie Jones and Zac went off injured and I will be surprised if they are fit in time for next week's derby cup match. As for the league position, it does not look good, but we have played mostly teams from the top ten so far, and few from the lower positions, so we can hope things will improve, provided we can get back to having sixteen fit players!
