For any travelling up for the day or weekend; From Lime Street station in Liverpool, you can take Merseyrail direct to Rock Ferry station, which is the nearest station to Prenton Park (though anyone missing out the pubs and everything else in Liverpool quite frankly needs sectioning and made to go on a six week Awareness to Life programme!).
Outside Rock Ferry station is a pub, which is a shocker! Right up the hill then right to Prenton Park. Around 15-20 mins walk - think the (old) Somerset pub on Marston Lane to CPF - similar!
For those more adventurous, the real heart of Birkenhead is Hamilton Square - bit like centre of Oxford to CPF - not walkable but Merseyrail a couple of stops to Rock Ferry. Gallagher's pub is brilliant and views over the Mersey to the Liver Building and Albert Dock.
Yards from the away turnstiles is a pretty decent pub (forgotten name!). Large two room place with SKY and pool tables. Away section - big, steep and holding around 4000...should just about cope! 😉

Apparently the match is to be shown live on Eurosport, according to the Eurosport website. What income does the club get from this, I wonder.

This is all I could find. It will be some sort of deal. Probably inbetween replay and highlights. As it's still a commercial channel. Even the radio stations have to pay a fee.
As well as the prize money received for surviving each round the clubs in the competition receive money for their F.A. Cup matches which appear live on television. Again for many clubs, especially in the lower leagues, this extra revenue can be a real boost for a football club meaning the F.A. Cup is more than just a good, competitive competition but also a great source of income. The breakdown for T.V. money is as follows:
F.A. Cup Round - Live Match - Live Replay Match - Match Highlights
* First Round Proper – £67,500 – £33,750 – £6,750 * Second Round Proper – £72,000 – £36,000 – £6,750 * Third Round Proper – £144,000 – £72,000 – £6,750 * Fourth Round Proper – £144,000 – £72,000 – £6,750 * Fifth Round Proper – £247,500 – £123,750 – £6,750 * Sixth Round Proper – £247,500 – £123,750 – £6,750
As well as this the clubs competing in the F.A. Cup receive money for their matches appearing on live radio. For this clubs receive £8,100 for a full 90 minute broadcast, £4,050 for a half match broadcast and £2,025 for just 24 minutes of the live match featuring on the radio. So in total for reaching the final and for appearing multiple times live on the radio and on T.V. a club could earn over £2 million which is a decent amount for any club in the F.A. Cup.

Excellent research! Paul will be quite pleased, whatever the income level. My train is booked and I just need to get my ticket; just sorry that I cannot justify the detour down to Oxford to go by coach! As we are in the 'Cowshed' at Prenton, do we have to wear agricultural costume? We could do with a mock-up model ox, like the one which was taken to the 1906 Amateur Cup Final. Hope they let us put the banners up.

birkenhead central is the closest station its abt 30 min walk or a short bus ride . in the away end you have bars and the food is good aswell . the other train stations are to fare to walk and if you did walk if you dont know the area you will gwt lost from rock ferry i would say best park of 40 min to an hour walk

Thanks for the directions! It's a while since I was last in Birkenhead, but I have fond memories of the Mersey Ferry from my time at Liverpool Uni in 1970. Oxford City first got to the 1st RD of the FA Cup in 1901/2 courtesy of the demise of New Brighton Tower FC, who we should have played in the previous round.

Rock Ferry IS the closest station...been up there enough times since 1985! As for getting lost - if you'd actually read my opening post - or any other guide, you'll know it's a pretty simple 15-20min walk. Strikes me that if you think Prenton Park is 40 mins walk and 'you'll get lost'...you are quite frankly on a wind up...or half sharp!

Hi Tranmere supporter I come in peace.....As mentioned Rock Ferry is the closest station, its not too bad a walk. If you are driving, be aware that the top of the M6 is being converted into a 'smart' motorway which can add a bit of time to the journey, there is street parking around the ground, although there is a big car park at the ground. There is a fan zone (big tent in the car park) which I think away fans are welcome to use. With regards to banners/flags, I am pretty sure they would be OK, I am sure I've seen then in the Cowshed the stewards will be able to advise on the day they are a friendly bunch, note no need to dress as farmers etc its a name that goes back in time before the current stand was built. Enjoy your visit , and safe travels.

I'll say! The effort was tremendous, and we so nearly gained another win over League opposition. Tranmere fans were asking me (on the way back to the station) why are we languishing so far down the league table. They were really appreciative our play and thought we deserved to win. The sight of lots of Tranmere supporters clapping our team off the pitch will live long in my memory. Cannot wait for the replay! Well done you Hoops!!. Kabby had a grin a mile wide as he took the match ball: well deserved. I can't fault any of the players in terms of work rate today. They really wanted it, and they deserved it. Let's get the job completed in the replay.

Time to try and get into this properly I guess.
Wow. Wow wow wow. All the pain of conceding late has melted away a whole lot faster than it did against County last year! I guess the prospect of hosting a league side will do that for you.
Today was 100% bigger that Colchester last year. That game was magnificent and the pure, unbridled joy of the final whistle will rarely be matched but, let's be honest here, Colchester wouldn't have scored in another 90 minutes. Today's game was open, entertaining, and always in the balance. This wasn't a result based on one good cross and header, we repeatedly created high quality chances and did so playing our own brand of football. Everything we got today we earned twice over.
Then of course a draw finally gives us the home game we've been waiting for and a chance to finally pull a big crowd (and hopefully the cameras) into Marsh Lane. I can't have been the only one glancing sideways at the likes of Haringey who have had the chance to host a game against a league club and wishing it was us - now it is. A guaranteed spot in the 2nd round is all well and good until you draw another non-league side away, at least we know what our prize is for drawing. It should have been Notts County last season, now it's Tranmere.
The main thing, however, setting this one apart from last season is Tranmere themselves. Notts County and Colchester were pretty good to us last season, they seemed to understand that we're used to a different way of doing things as fans and made concessions for that, but Tranmere were something else.
I lost count of how many members of staff asked us questions about the club and our season so far with a genuine interest in hearing what we had to say and was stunned when a steward not only was happy for us to put flags up but even gave us tips on where to hang them. The reception our players got from the home fans, at full time in particular, was magnificent and the amount of tweets and Facebook messages we've had simply congratulating us has been really quite overwhelming. Everybody was, to put is as simply as possible, really bloody nice.
Going into a game against a big side a lot of us would typically be worried about what kind of fans will turn up, but with Tranmere I'm just looking forward to seeing them again.
Back to reality though. Can anybody imagine anything worse than Dartford on a Tuesday night?

Possibility of the replay being on TV . I really hope so, but we won't know yet until all the games are played. But as we are at home against a side two steps higher in a replay. All eyes could be on Marsh lane

Must be the first time in a long while that City have played infront of a larger crowd than their erm...illustrious neighbours! 😊
