I may be alone in this, but it feels like this new 'feature' today has crossed a line or two. Its bothering me for a few reasons:
- The concept. Is this something a football club should be producing?
- The execution. The whole thing is written in the first person and therefore reads as coming from an individual rather than an organisation, yet has no listed author. This is a big deal to me because the article itself is worded too unprofessionally to be anything other than an opinion piece, indirectly insulting a couple of clubs, yet is presented as being 'from the club'. It also bothers me that more effort seems to have gone into the horse racing and greyhounds section than the football one, with imagery and attention to formatting that the rest lacks.
- The message. Is OCFC an organisation that directly supports/encourages gambling? We already have a shirt sponsor which purportedly makes money from signing people up to gambling sites, is this part of that partnership? How do other sponsors, particularly those working in mental health, feel about the club encouraging gambling? Is the throwaway line about gambling being for over-18s only at the end of the article enough?
- The goal. What is this meant to achieve? Clicks on the website? Interaction on social media? Attracting another gambling-based partner?
- The practicalities. This has presumably been produced by someone at the club and producing it will have taken time - what was de-prioritised in order to make time for it? What could have been in its place? This is a significantly lengthier and more detailed piece than the recent statement about Jack Self leaving the club or, in more positive news, any recent signing - could we have had an update on the club's community work? The club's other squads? The long-term situation regarding the management of the first team?
I'm not angry, just kinda disappointed with the direction the club seems to be moving in. As fans we tend to ve a bit starved of informationat times, and seeing something like this taking pride of place all over the clubs feeds feels like a bit of a kick in the teeth.
