I also think that sometimes you need to make substitutes at the right time, I didn't think the starting line-up was our strongest against such a very good squad, I hope collectively as a group that can be taken on board, a 28 goal player bench warming, after doing well when given little time against Bath should have been rewarded with a start, I acknowledge that they had a big backline, but other clubs got joy by getting at them in the area, too many balls went to nobody in the area first half why they went down and scored at the other end. My opinion.

I feel a little guilty having a moan and groan having not sang the praises after Monday's excellent performance, but today was so disappointing. Maidstone are a big, physical and powerful side and are good at what they do so why did we play to their strengths? Too many times we played the ball in the air, just helping it on rather than picking a pass. Harvey was isolated and generally had both centre backs to contend with and was unable to shine like he did on Monday. Not until Zac came on did we get the ball down and start passing it with real purpose. Of course, it's easy to say that Maidstone didn't let us play, but I saw little evidence of us trying to play 'our way'. The Manager(who is doing an excellent job) often praises the oppostion and shows them respect, but we too are a good team and he surely knows we can do better.
Let's learn from today and try to put it right in the next game. Another good attendance with a good following from Maidstone.

Maidstone are, as you say, good at what they do: strong in defence, quick on the break, and more than ready to time waste and keep booting the ball out of the ground in order to prevent opponents from getting into a flowing rhythm. As a result, the game was very stop-start today and City were generally stifled. But, for a strong promotion contender, I didn't see much to admire in the Stones' play. They were not frightening, just efficient. To do well against a team like that, you mustn't concede any soft goals (which we did) and you need a bit of brilliance or luck to get your first goal and open things up a bit. On Monday we had both and Bath were overrun as a result. Today we had neither. Our finishing was weak (apart from Josh's shot) and the ball just wouldn't quite run for us in the area. We were going to be restricted in chances so it was disappointing that when we had headers in front of goal we twice placed them in the keeper's arms instead of doing what their striker Rory did with his first chance and head it to the corner.
So we were not, in my opinion, out-muscled or outclassed. They were no better technically and we had equal possession and an equal number of chances created. The difference was a combination of better finishing from the Stones, and their defenders doing just enough to put our man off, because they were not caught out of position or in possession, as we sometimes were. We can learn from this and be a little more canny and organised like them.

On the positive side, i think the signing of Harry Kyprianou, gives us the option of three Centre Backs, which is another formation combination on the table, Like David says it's still a learning curve, we did keep the spine of the side from last season, but also lost some good players, who have been replaced by talented others, it takes time to gel fully. I do hope thats not too long with the FA Cup around the corner!

Really good, as a distant supporter, to see those who were at the match commenting on the strengths/weaknesses of the team's approach to the game (as opposed to the factual, blow-by-blow website report). Sounds as though Maidstone were good, but perhaps we played to their strengths and didn't go to our Plan B (or C?) soon enough.
City will need to be at their very best next weekend: they have yet to take a single point from their meetings with Havant & Waterlooville over the years.

Is the FA Cup draw Monday Chris? someone asked me at the game.. Yes it is. It would be nice to have another long run, but maybe, after the last few years, that would be asking a bit much?

Take each game as it comes, we will get stronger, the fighting spirit and the characters are all still there, They just need to be firing on all cylinders, then you've got the players 😁 of course a favourable draw is always welcome!
