Could City keep alive there title dream?
1st Half 2-2-2
Freya Mowbray; Rhiannon Weller, Megan Thorpe(C); Lauren Page, Lily Hernandez; Miriam Pritchard, Alice Ford. Subs: Chloe Holden, Iona Smith, Isabella Richards, Blanche Mayo.
On another cold morning at Court Place Farm the City girls met their title rivals knowing only a win would be enough to keep alive their hopes of regaining their title. With much work carried out on the training ground and a full squad to pick from hopes were high that this could be achieved.
The match started at a very fierce pace with both teams looking to get an early advantage but it was the City girls who seemed to settle quicker and the flowing football that girls have been producing for the last couple of months again began to flow. The best chance of the half fell to City's top goal scorer Alice "NODDY" Ford who turned very well just inside Swindon's half and powered towards goal and shot well but the Spitfires keeper made a very good stop. Swindon themselves had breaks in the first half but the Hoops defence were on top form with Captain Megan Thorpe and Rhiannon Weller having one of their best games of the season against the Spitfires pacy attack.
HT 0-0
2nd Half; 2-2-2;
Freya Mowbray; Rhiannon Weller, Megan Thorpe(C); Lauren Page, Lily Hernandez; Miriam Pritchard, Alice Ford. Subs: Chloe Holden, Iona Smith, Isabella Richards, Blanche Mayo.
The instructions at half time from Ash and Wayne was more of the same and a warning that it would be hard as it was a tight first half in the match at Swindon back in November but the girls were really up for it and were raring to go at Swindon from the whistle. But Swindon started the second half very strongly not letting the City girls settle with their very quick attacking players causing city all sorts of problems and just 5 minutes into the half Swindon took the lead with a long range shot that took a lucky deflection right into the corner leaving keeper Mowbray no chance. For the rest of the half City huffed and puffed but could not break the Spits down and it was the City defence that was under pressure although the defence and midfield stood strong and did not let Swindon add to there solitary goal.
FT 0-1
The Oxford City and Swindon girls gave everything in this top of the table clash the game was played in great spirit with some thunderous but fair tackling. The game was a credit to girls football and football in general and I hope this is a start of a rivalry that will last for many years to come.
The City girls continue to improve they have a real belief and desire to perform at the top of their game and they are a credit to themselves you should be very proud of your performance because I know we all are.
Regards
James
