Oxford City Colts U13 Match Report
14th February 2010
Benson 6 - Oxford City Colts 3
A mad 10 minutes either side of half time saw City lose a game they dominated for long periods. In stark contrast to the closely fought contest between the two sides in Court Place Farm in September, when temperatures soared into the 70s, this game was played in freezing temperatures with intermittent rain and sleet making playing conditions difficult for both sides.
On the back of an excellent performance against Milton seven days ago, City went into the match full of confidence and this was apparent from the first whistle. City held onto the ball, used it well down both flanks and in an improvement from last week they pressurised the Benson goal. With Jack Kent looking particularly sharp up front, it was no surprise when he gave City the lead after ten minutes; his trademark run and finish giving the home side’s defence no chance.
City kept up their pressure and were awarded a penalty a few minutes later when Joe Roberson was tripped as he ran into the Benson area. Joe took the penalty but was denied by an excellent save from the Benson keeper but Jack Kent was first to react and swept the ball into the back of the empty net.
With a 2-0 lead and looking in complete control, City took their foot off the gas and let Benson back into the game. They stopped playing the passing game that had looked so good and lost possession far too easily. And to their credit Benson seized their opportunity with both hands and on the stroke of half time the scores were level.
With the rain and sleet starting to fall, the half time talk was difficult; the boys were told to start playing as team once more but as the second half started it was clear that the message had not got through. Benson were rampant, dominating possession and cutting through the City defence with great efficiency. Within 10 minutes they had scored another three goals as City looked all at sea. Only then did City knuckle down and start to play football again; and for the rest of the match they looked every bit as good as their opponents.
Jack Kent completed his hat-trick with five minutes to go as thundered a through ball into the roof of the Benson net. But with the game virtually over Benson grabbed another goal as City failed to clear a corner. So a harsh lesson for City who once again should have taken something from a game. They were certainly not three goals worse than their opponents. Hopefully the boys will have learned that complacency must be avoided and that they should maintain their concentration and discipline throughout the entire game. Many thanks to James Lawson for running the line.
Team: J Russell, L Williams, B Muinami, M White, S Lawson, T Homer, J Roberson, T Walker, J Kent, B Tombs, P McKenna. Subs B Proper, A Ball
