Oxford City Colts U13 Match Report
14th March 2010
Botley 2 - Oxford City Colts 5
A bruising encounter at Botley saw City win their second match in a row. Following an excellent result at Greater Leys last week, confidence was high and the only worry was one of complacency against a big and strong Botley side. But from the first whistle City started well controlling the game with some good passing football on this pleasant Spring morning.
Playing with the wind and down the slope, City pinned Botley back into their own half. Jack Kent, this week starting with Alex Ball in attack, again looked lively and caused the home team’s defence a number of problems. The midfield partnership of Joe Roberson and Tyler Walker won more than their fair possession of the ball and with the constant City pressure, it was no surprise when Jack Kent gave the visitors the lead after 5 minutes.
City continued to dominate and within 15 minutes they doubled their lead; Jack Kent again on target. But unlike last week, City then relaxed and allowed Botley back into the game. The home side started to win the ball in midfield and were unlucky not to pull a goal back when they hit the post just before the break.
The second half was always going to more difficult with City playing up hill and into the breeze. And so it proved when Botley scored within a minute of the restart. The defence failed to clear a ball hit over the top and from a right wing cross one of Botley strikers netted from close range. Worse was to follow when the referee award a penalty to the home side which was cleanly put away to bring the score back to 2-2.
This setback galvanised the City side and at once they showed more urgency to win the ball. Their passing improved and with five minutes they were back in front when Jack Kent completed his third hat-trick in as many games. A renewed confidence flowed through the City team. The defence looked stronger and more committed with Mitchell White never shirking a challenge. With tired legs on both sides, City exploited gaps in the Botley defence allowing Jack to score his fourth of the game. And in the last few minutes with City dominating, Alex Ball crashed the ball into the Botley net to ensure another three points.
So a very different match to last week saw City dominate in the early stages before allowing the opposition back into the game. But it was pleasing to see the boys refocus and win the game by playing disciplined passing football. Finally, many thanks go to Tony Proper for running the line.
Team: J Russell, B Proper, S Lawson, A Martin, B Muinami, T Homer, J Roberson, T Walker, L Williams, A Ball, J Kent. Subs M White, B Tombs.
