Oxford City Colts U13 Match Report
21st March 2010
Hinksey Park 2 - Oxford City Colts 0
With some excellent performances in recent weeks, City’s revival came to a temporary halt against a strong and well-organised Hinksey side. The boys gathered at the Grandpoint Recreation Ground on this bright and warm Spring day full of confidence. Unfortunately leading scorer Jack Kent, recovering from an ankle injury, was forced to start on the bench but otherwise the City side was little changed from previous weeks.
Unlike recent matches, however, it was the opposition who dominated proceedings early on. Hinksey, currently challenging for promotion, competed with far more commitment than the visitors and when City did win the ball they were closed down quickly and were unable to pass the ball with any fluency. Under such pressure it was difficult for the boys to develop a rhythm and the flowing football of previous weeks was not to be seen.
Hinskey took the lead after 15 minutes when City failed to clear an attack which started down the right wing. When the ball was crossed into the City box one of the Hinksey strikers netted at the far post. Only then did City start to raise their game winning more ball in midfield. But unable to open up their opponent’s defence City brought on Jack Kent after 25 minutes and he immediately went close.
But at the break City still found themselves one goal down and chasing the game. The boys were told to keep possession by moving into space and spreading the ball to both flanks. The second half started with City again competing well but unable to create chances. With the home side challenging hard City were not able to move the ball easily and they lacked the width that had brought them recent success. The match continued with both sides playing long balls resulting in end to end football which, although exciting, lacked the quality that City have tried to develop in their recent matches.
City were unlucky not to equalise mid way through the second period when Daniel Dennis saw his shot come back off the post after the Hinksey keeper had saved well. City continued to push forward but inevitably left gaps at the back; and with the pace of the Hinksey side on the counter attack, City have keeper Joe Russell to thank for keeping them in the game with a number of good saves. However, with five minutes to go Hinksey made the three points secure as the City defence were unable to make an effective challenge on one of the home team’s strikers.
So City were brought back to Earth by a strong and determined Hinksey side who did not give the boys any time on the ball. The boys must learn to pass the ball a little more quickly and move into space to give team mates more options. So plenty to work on in training over the next few weeks. Many thanks to Mike Dennis for running the line.
