With Kidlington 5 points in front of City, having played a game more, this was a game that City really had to win.
An absolute cracking game of football was unfortunately abandoned with 18 minutes remaining with City leading 2-1 after Kidlington's Gary Parker recieved a broken leg (later diagnosed as Fibia & Tibula) after a fair 50-50 challenge with City's centre-half.
City started the brightest, and a cracking 20 yard drive from Paul Kimber rattled the crossbar. The boy Kimber then had 2 glorious one on one's, which Kidlington Keeper Keith Mitchell did well to keep out. The middle period of the half then belonged to Kidlington, as there midfield trio of Parker, Stuart Clarke and Craig Simpson began to run the midfield. An excellent save from Colin Fleet from Kidlington stiker, Nick East, and then a goal line clearance from Simon Pagano really got Kidlington into their stride. It was no suprise then, with 25 minutes gone that Kidlington took the lead thanks to an excellent strike from 20 yards from Gary Parker. Only a minute later, it could have been even worse for City, as ex city vet, Stuart Clarke burst through only to lift it over Colin Fleet, but luckily for City, it went over the bar. This was a wake up call that city needed, and a change of formation swung the play back City's way, and another chance came Kimber's way only for the big frame of Keith Mitchell to stop yet another effort. City then got the equalizer that they deserved right on the stroke of half-time, as a long ball played from the back was taken down by Wayne Holden and volleyed into the top corner from 25 yards.
HALF TIME: Kidlington 1 City 1
City started the second half where they left of the end of the first, and it was no surprise when they deservedly took the lead as Holden turned his marker and crossed for Julio Barresi to cooly finish to put City 2-1 ahead. City should have then been awarded a penalty when Holden was brought down. Barresi had another great chance to wrap the game up after going through one on one, but another fine save from Mitchell. But then came the unfortunate injury to Gary Parker. After speaking to Kidlington Manager, Warren Jones, I agreed that we would respect whatever decision they wanted, and go with them. They felt that thay could not continue with the game, so the referee abandoned the game with 18 minutes remaining. We now need to wait for the league to inform us of whether or not we get the points, or whether it has to be replayed?
All of us at City wish Gary the best and a speedy recovery.
FULL TIME: Kidlington 1 (Parker) City 2 (Holden, Barresi).
Squad: Colin Fleet, Simon Pagano, Robert Tutton, Julian Dark, Justin Lee, Chris Fontaine, Paul Kimber, Ronnie Williams, Mark Orlando, Wayne Holden, Julio Barresi. Subs: Leigh Bastable, Dave Southam, Mark Jennings.
Next game next Wednesday at home to Wantage Town, kick-off 7.45PM.
