Oxford City Colts U13 Match Report
24th April 2010
Oxford City 2 - Summertown Pirates 2
In another excellent performance City were unlucky not to take all three points in a close encounter against Summertown played on the 1st team pitch. The overnight rain helped to freshen up the playing surface which had recently started to look very dry. With all 13 regulars desperate to play it was difficult to decide on a starting eleven but given the large playing area and the need for substitutions, there were plenty of opportunities for all the boys to get involved.
Having lost to Summertown early in season City were keen for revenge and from the first whistle the boys were extremely competitive winning many of the 50-50 challenges. Having worked on possession in training it was rewarding to see City keep the ball and use the width of the pitch to their advantage; Ben Tombs looking particularly impressive down the right flank. But it was Summertown who opened the scoring. As in the previous meeting the pace of their strikers on the counter attack unlocked City’s defence; a through ball, an excellent headed flick and a clinical finish saw the visitors 1-0 up after 15 minutes. Worse was to follow as Summertown doubled their lead five minutes later. The City defence was guilty of ball watching from a free kick just outside the box leaving a free header for one of the Summertown strikers.
Despite these set backs City kept playing good football and created a number of chances with Jack Kent hitting the post and Ben Tombs going close. And even though City were two down at the break there was a sense that the boys were still very much in the game having had more of the possession and territorial dominance. So the boys were told to be patient and keep playing as they had done in recent weeks. The second half started much as the first had ended with more of the play in the Summertown half. Joe Roberson and Tyler Walker again enjoyed a great deal of possession and with City playing the ball down both wings the Summertown defence was under constant pressure. However, the visitors always looked dangerous when going forward and the pace of Brian Muinami and Steven Lawson was put to the test on a number of occasions.
Eventually City forced their way back into the match and inevitably it was Jack Kent who pulled one back striking home firmly from inside the area when Summertown failed to clear. And with ten minutes remaining Jack scored again, this time following a typically strong run into the opposition penalty area. Sensing victory, City threw everything into attack and despite a number of chances they were unable to score again in the last few minutes.
So another point and a good performance from City sees them edge away from the relegation places. Every single boy played well in what was an excellent game to watch. However, with only two games to go it promises to be a nail-biting end to the season. Many thanks to Mike Dennis for running the line and Rachel Dennis for providing the food.
Team: J Russell, B Proper, Steven Lawson, A Martin, B Muinami, B Tombs, T Walker, J Roberson, L Williams, J Kent, A Ball. Subs T Homer, D Dennis
