Oxford City Colts U13 Match Report
28th April 2010
Oxford City 2 - Marston Saints Red 2
The City fans witnessed yet another nail-biting finish at Court Place Farm as the boys played hosts to local rivals Marston Saints on a warm April evening. With many of boys sharing the same classroom only hours before the game there was always going to be a competitive spirit to the game but the supporters of both sides watched one the best matches of the season as the visitors fought back from a two-nil deficit to take a well-earned point.
As they have done so many times in recent weeks City started brightly and once again looked comfortable on the ball in midfield. But against a well-organised Marston defence they found it difficult to create clear goal scoring opportunities. Jack Kent went close, unlucky to be denied by a combination of the keeper and crossbar. Marston also looked dangerous and with plenty of pace in their attack City were never able to relax at the back.
At half time honours were even although City had arguably looked the more likely side to score in the first half. The second period continued in the same vein with both sides searching for the first goal. And it was City who opened the scoring through a Jack Kent strike after 40 minutes. Marston then started to push more players forward and looked likely to equalise. But slightly against the run off play City then doubled their lead when Alex Ball buried the ball in the back of the Marston net from close range.
Marston then threw everything forward and City started to hang on but they were not helped when Steven Lawson needed to be replaced because of a leg injury with 15 minutes to go. Marston seized the initiative an almost immediately pulled a goal back when a long shot evaded Joe Russell’s grasp. With their tails well and truly up the visitors continue to pressurise the City goal and the efforts were rewarded with an equaliser a few minutes later.
It looked as if City were going to go home empty handed but once again the boys raised their game, not wishing to loose in the final few minutes. The City fans, now used to close finishes, watched nervously as both sides looked for victory. And although there were opportunities at either end, a draw was certainly a fair result. Best of luck in the remaining matches to Eddy, Brooko and the Marston side who help to provide an excellent evening’s football. Thanks also to Mike Dennis for running the line and also a big thank you to all who came to support.
Team: J Russell, B Proper, A Martin, B Muinami, S Lawson, T Homer, J Roberson, T Walker, B Tombs, D Dennis. J Kent Subs A Ball, L Williams
