The over 40's won the county cup final in style last night with a 2-0 win against Chinnor at Abingdon Town.
Manager Paul Creed was absent last night, and left over 35's manager Wayne Holden in charge, but left him a team talk to read out that had all the players in stitches. Unfortunately, I can't share any of this with you, as I will probably get banned from this message board??? The main message was to go out and play exactly as we did the week before in the semi-final, and we would have no problems. The boys did exactly that from the minute the whistle went, and could have scored within 10 seconds had Fordy not had his Predators on the wrong feet. Chinnor were really struggling to cope with some of the quick free flowing football that City were playing. However they were dealt a blow after only 7 minutes in to the game when Julio Barresi had to be taken to hospital, due to an horrific eye injury after a coming together with Chinnor centre-half Richard Carr. Simon Pagano came onto the right hand side of Midfield, and Chris Fontaine moved up front.
Although a blow to City, this didn't seem to affect them, and 2 minutes later they were 1-0 up after Paul Kimber curled a Beckham like free-kick over the wall to give the Chinnor keeper no chance.
After 15 minutes it was 2-0. After some neat one touch football on the edge of the box, Pagano slipped Paul Kimber through, who side stepped the keeper and rolled into an empty net to get his and City's second.
HALF-TIME: Oxford City 2 Chinnor 0
Chinnor stepped up their game in the 2nd half, but the solid back 3 of Robert Tutton, Julian Dark, Justin Lee & keeper Colin Fleet stood firm. City had a good couple of one on one chances towards the end, first from Shaun Bradbury & then from Pagano, but the score remained 2-0 and the vets won the Over 40's County cup for the first time. One funny moment in the 2nd half to mention was when Olly (Mark Orlando) decided to mimic what his jockey friend did on Saturday at Ascot. Olly, he had a horse to fall off, what was your excuse?
Well done boys. Another cracking performance.
FULL TIME: Oxford City 2 Chinnor 0
Team: Colin Fleet, Robert Tutton, Julian Dark, Justin Lee, Chris Fontaine, Shaun Bradbury, Mike Ford, Ronnie Williams, Mark Orlando, Paul Kimber, Julio Barresi. Subs: Simon Pagano (7 mins), Steve Richardson (50 mins), Martin Smy (Not used).
Next week sees the return of the over 35's, and 2 vitally important games. Monday night at home to Ducklington, kick-off 7.45PM. A point in this game guarantees us runners-up spot.
Then on Wednesday night our last game of the season is at home to Wantage Town, kick-off 6.30PM. This will be played on one of the outside pitches at Court Place Farm, as the main City pitch is no longer available. Wantage need to beat us, otherwise they are relegated. Obviously if we don't get the point we need against Ducklington, then the win is also essential for us to claim the runners-up spot.
