So, for the third time this season, and the second time under Jonah, City get three wins on the trot. Perhaps that is what we should be celebrating, given where we were in the first months of this season. Our first 13 games produced only 8 points -- relegation form, of course -- and with early exits in both cup competitions, no sponsorship money, Oxford United loanees returning and no sense of security in the club's continued existence, they were dark days when he took over from Justin. But we are going to end the season 14th, with a 3G pitch looking likely for next season and some renewed optimism in the club. Really, the turn-around has been very creditable to all concerned, and in its way, as much of a triumph as making the play-offs or getting a fine cup run would be next season.
Today wasn't great: a very end of season match on a bumpy, dusty pitch against mediocre opponents who spent much of the match just trying to keep the score close. City were lively in the first half and worthy of their lead (nice left foot clip over his shoulder from Jefferson), but disappointed in the second, especially when Margate were reduced to ten men. We parked the bus and, but for two efforts from sub Conor Furlong which their keeper saved well, we never looked like adding to our score. The final pass went astray, the shots were blocked, a few wrong decisions were made... we've seen it before, and it's why we have scored so few goals this season.
But in the end, it was more about the result than the performance. It was our third clean sheet on the trot, too. Niate and Essuman looked comfortable, and Freddie Grant had a good game. The three at the back line-up has solidified things for the time being.
Next week, expect a big crowd at Ebbsfleet who beat Maidenhead in front of over 3,300 today--a nice way for the season to end, and a stiff test against a team who will be giving their all for the Championship (though I think Maidenhead deserve it more).
