Well that was a strange game.... I knew I was at the football, but couldn't tell anyone who was not there, like my dad, what happened because I don't know.
I thought first half we were superb, dominated large parts and created a multitude of chances which on another day could, and perhaps should have put us out of sight. Rob Sinclair looks quality and composed on the ball and took his goal superbly. Zak, Pearce, Poku and Patterson all had a first half that looked like they were enjoying themselves....playing around welling with relative ease.
Second half and welling predictably came hard at us and started closing down faster which put us off our stride. It was much closer and not so many clear cut chances in open play, defensively we looked shaky, where welling had several free headers in the first half and more in the second (unlike Dartford they seemingly couldn't put them away) this is our single problem right now. However it was a balanced half with City slipping deeper and deeper but being dangerous on the counter and Welling pushing up.
Then came the controversy...
Seemingly after abit of ping pong in the box Pearce, who had started the attack with a great run down the right, slotted the ball home to make it 2 - 0...unfortunately the linesman raised his flag to the bemusement of those of us behind the goal...not only did it come off a Welling player last... but it was another city player offside and Pearce was almost certainly onside....unless the ref thought the other player was interfering despite being over 3 yards from the strike....a curious decision indeed.
Then not long later a Welling corner flashed across our goal....it was booted clear with both teams playing on before the ref blew up....ran over to the back stick where a Welling player and Hendo had a coming together and showed Hendo a straight red card...I ahve not the foggiest what went on, but obviously can't have been good. The ref gave a Pen which was dispatched well.
Happy with the draw with what went on in the end but feel we should have taken 3 points given the chances we created in the first half.

Nothing happened with Hendo and their player other than they both tangled and ended in a heap, no push, no punch and the referee was looking the other way, even the assessor was baffled, luckily it's on film so I'd fully expect it to be overturned

Felt completely ripped off! Perfectly good second goal and a rediculous red card, Red card will be rescinded but that's two points the Ref has cost us, really poor from the officials.

All I can say is I can't wait for the video of those incidents. After the game Hendo didn't even know what he had been sent off for and the assessor (who was an incredibly friendly bloke) would only say that he had a lot of questions for the ref. Word on the street is that the video shows no wrongdoing on Hendo's part but does show their player swinging an arm but we all know that evidence doesn't necessarily get you anywhere with the footballing authorities. The truly damning thing will be if the footage clearly shows the referee looking the other way - even if we don't get it rescinded I hope that will be a big black mark against his name.

I submitted a report to them but they went with this guy's. They haven't used any that I've sent them, I can only assume they want something shorter than the standard 300 word summary but I've not had any specific instructions, just an email address.
Between that and the Oxford Mail butchering what I write them slapping a sensationalist headline on it I'm very glad we have the website for a proper report!

Well the video is now up at www.thenationalleague.org.uk/match-info/match-centre/1-2850484To be honest I think the ref is actually watching the penalty incident all the time - but I can not see any one-sided clash as his decision would imply. My opinion would be a drop ball for a stop the game and cards for both players. If anything the Welling player does appear to swing an arm. I can't see the red card being over-ruled - but I can see a retrospective card against the Welling player. The 'offside' goal is one of those that half the refs would say the penalised player was offside - and the over half would let it go. The referee should have issued a yellow card from the start as the Welling #6 was in his face all the time with his whinging and was NOT their captain from what I could see. All I can say is I can't wait for the video of those incidents. After the game Hendo didn't even know what he had been sent off for and the assessor (who was an incredibly friendly bloke) would only say that he had a lot of questions for the ref. The Welling manager in his post-match interview said their penalty was given for a head-butt Just parroting what the ref has told him presumably. No headbutt in sight.
