Disappointing performance I’m afraid. Once we scored we sat back and let Hereford dictate the game, we were probably a little fortunate only to lose by one goal.
Jonah got it right in the post match chat, just never really got going.
Game over, Notts County to look forward too now 😀👍

I can't say I saw anything much off the pitch. There were police and security guards in attendance and the segregation seemed to work well. As for the match, it was entirely predictable, sad to say: we didn't look at home until the closing stages when the subs came on and we had something resembling our first team all over the pitch. I know it's hard to balance resting players for an even bigger match next week, and putting out a team with a chance of winning this one; in fact, it was impossible. Jonah faced a tough choice but by weakening the team he sacrificed the FA Trophy. Personally I think that was a mistake, as we had a better chance of further cup glory and sponsorship in this competition than we now have in the FA Cup, whatever fresh legs we put out next week, but I would be absolutely delighted to be proved wrong!
Report wise, City took a while to settle as they didn't seem used to each other. Freddie Grant's early goal with a header from a corner gave us hope but it wasn't long before Hereford levelled when Jon Mills took advantage of a hesitant defence waiting for an offside flag which never came. Gradually the Bulls took over the midfield and started to run the match, without creating much of danger until the second half when they hit the post. At this point all the warning signs were there, but no subs came on until after they had scored. Just before the goal, we had a free kick in a promising position which was completely wasted. A minute later, they get one in an almost identical place at the other end, it was floated over beautifully, our marking went AWOL and stopper O'Shea had a free header past Jack who was left in no man's land.
After this, Patterson, Sinclair and Navarro came on and Poku resumed his best position, in the middle. City now had more of the play but Hereford were well-organised and got plenty of men back behind the ball. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jones both got into good crossing positions down the right but played their crosses ahead of team-mates, and Zac had a shot well saved.
Overall, we can't complain, even if their equaliser was a bit dodgy. They wanted it more, they were tighter at the back, busier in midfield and more direct up front. We were out-muscled, outplayed and out-sung! Hereford are a good side, as good as any in our league IMHO. But if we'd started with a full strength side, I can't help thinking we'd have got at least a draw and probably more.

Just wanted to add, no disrespect for the players brought in. Eddie Jones deserved another run and did a decent job in midfield. Jack Tutton ran and tried, but looked a little out of his depth in a big match today. Ezra Forde is great as an impact sub or playing alongside a main striker, but on his own up front against the best defence in the Southern League, he was never going to get much change out of them. Even Patto didn't when he came on, but together they could have asked the questions. Godfrey always gives 100%, but central defence is just not his position (why wasn't a fit-again Hendo restored?)
Still, there are positives. Freddie played well again, and it was nice to see him get on the score sheet at last. Joe Oastler looked as assured and composed as ever. Mo did his usual job well. Zac kept running and always looked comfortable on the ball. No-one got injured or sent off despite it being a physical game. And there was a good crowd--maybe 650? Good for us, anyway!

Well, today's performance was far below what we know we can produce but, under the circumstances, I think that's entirely acceptable.
As much as I would like to think that every player will be giving everything every single time they pull on the shirt, the simple fact is that next weekend was always going to be in their minds. Its no surprise to see players backing out of 50-50s when they're 7 days away from the biggest game of their careers and I think Jonah was absolutely correct not to risk bookings for Sinclair and Navarro. I know we've done very well out of the cup run already but that's no reason to look at next Saturday as anything other than an opportunity to do something amazing and we need to be at full strength to do that. I don't love seeing us lose but the simple fact is that this game mattered significantly less than the one before it and the one after it.
Hereford were a good side and did enough to beat us so fair play to them: I'm sure they'll be able to ballance cup and league commitments and do very well this season. Its easy to look at them as a team from a league below us and think we should be embarrassed to get beaten but in reality there's only a few places between us and, as a phoenix club, they're still going through the process of climbing to a level which is truly representative.

Totally agree with you toocoulson4schoolson and 100% behind Jonah in what he did. Think both sides were very cagey definitely the prospective of next week's FA cup game played massive part. We are making our history in FA Cup so would have that any day over the FA Trophy this year for sure, always next year for the Trophy!
Think all the players will look in the mirror and know what they could have done better so would be wrong to single out praise to just regular 1st XI players as IMHO none of them played superb and made mistakes you wouldn't normally expect from them, likewise would be wrong to criticise Jonah to say any changes to starting side he did wrong, had to be done, at end of day ysterdays game vs next week massive big game difference, let's not forget Forde has played his part in previous games and Tutton came on in Leiston game and in many opinions proved himself in his performance in that game that helped secure the win so proved then they were not out of their depth at this level as helped us progress in FA Cup!
Yes today Forde could have scored but thats football least he had chances and the game I was watching Tutton played a good part with Mceachran linking up in attempt to carve Hereford open and helped create the limited chances yesterday. I may be wrong but I think Forde, Hirst and Tutton could be only u19s? as they played big parts in our successful FA Youth cup team last year? (remember seeing a couple of games Hirst and Tutton play very well together, would be nice to see them play with Zac surrounded with some of our experienced players to see what they could do as a team) so let's remember these 3 are very young at this level and need nurturing and developing into the step up, which I hope Jonah and the club will help them to do, so hopefully will be our future which I am sure we all love some home grown talent. All players need to be given chances and match time, including the likes of Hirst to integrate them all into team otherwise when we have any of the regular 1st XI out or them not playing to their best we need options of players to bring in.
Now let's not crush anyone, lets all give support and all get behind everyone for next week and for the league climb we are looking to do after FA cup which IMHO we can do. COYH...

Its a wonder Hereford didn't rest mills etc as they have massive game at Fleetwood next week..
As in the league when we were losing subs made after we went 2-1 down, could easily have been booked injured then.
At least he mentioned this post match.
On to the cup let's hope all this works out to plan. Personally it would be incredible if we get any sort of result against an in form county. But I said that about Colchester. Really hope the loss doesn't have a negative effect and we do ourselves proud with a full strength team next week. The money from TV etc is going to help the club tremendously. Then its on to keeping ourselves in this division.

This Friday evening at 5.15 on BT Sport1 is a preview of the Cup games, so we should get a mention! Also in today's NLP a centre page spread replete with luminous green shirts; in the Sunday Telegraph a back page item in the Sports section about Bobby Moore and Harry Redknapp. Spot the two errors!

Yes, when I wrote my last post I hadn't heard Jonah and didn't know about the four bookings and Hendo failing a late fitness test. Under the circumstances I too think he was right to put Navarro and Sinclair on the bench, though I still think a Patterson-Forde duo up front might have made a difference. Never mind, we move on now and as OWHH says, let's hope this doesn't disrupt our previous momentum or affect confidence. Of course Notts County will be strong favourites but that also means all the pressure will be on them and our lads can go out and enjoy themselves trying to make it difficult for them!

OM has the attendance as 480: was it that small?
Hereford at home to Dagenham & Redbridge in the next round: they would have been interesting opponents at Marsh Lane.

480 Hereford Fans through the main gate. 175 through thr Oxford City table/entrance. What i was told Saturday. That sounds a lot more reasonable. When we were told the official figures had it at just 50 home fans we could count at least that many in the Shed alone.

There was a lad with a counter when we went through but he had to be reminded to count us. I suspect a number went through uncounted because even 175 seems too few. I'd say there were more than 125 in the stand and along the fence. Maybe 190, 200 City fans overall, making the true attendance (not counting police, security, stewards, press etc.) around 675.

There were also quite a few who just came to get a ticket for County game and went. I am going to get another today as they weren't keen on sending away end tickets to Nottingham

We used to play the Daggers in the Isthmian back in the seventies always a dam good side. Think Hereford will Give them a lot to think about. If I was Herefords manager I wouldn't change too much for next season either should they go up which if they carry on like this looks likely in a very strong Southern premier league this season.
