City's 'Master Plan to Cause a First Round Upset' was successfully started today with Phase One: Get Them to Underestimate You. No Tranmere scouts watching today's game will think their team has anything to fear now; indeed, their report may question how on earth City have actually reached the First Round at all.
We know better: City can actually play some good football on their day, but today wasn't it. To be fair, this match was always going to be difficult for a home team which had just come through a pretty epic battle with Hemel and now had to face the fresh legs of a hungry Chelmsford team with the best away record in the division. We could learn some things from their approach to an away match, as they were superior in almost every department and thoroughly deserved their win, even if the third goal in the dying minutes added a little gloss to the scoreline.
Still, it was disappointing to see us surrender an early lead and give away three goals through basic defensive errors, while our midfield gave the ball away too often and were not winning many second balls. Could it be that some were thinking of the big match to come and perhaps concerned not to get an injury or another yellow card? Maybe that's unfair, but the Essex boys outmuscled us today as well as being quicker moving forward. City's quick breaks from midfield foundered on the edge of their area time and again because no-one was getting behind them on the wing. Instead, once we fell behind and suddenly came to life, we tried to play through a massed defence in front of us, and we know that rarely works. We also wasted corners and produced only two shots on target.
To end on a more positive note, however, let us remember:
1. Frankie is back, and it was good to see him come on and start playing some long balls out from the back as Joe does. We know he is calm under pressure and he will also give Jonah the option of playing three at the back again.
2. Key players like Craig in goal, Joe, Robbie and Kabby played well.
3. Jonah would not have wanted to change a winning team, but this result gives him the freedom to experiment a bit against Chippenham.
4. We don't have to wait long for an opportunity to put this right.
Which I hope we do on Tuesday, as we need to if (a) we are not to drop into the relegation zone and (b) we are to have fans encouraged enough to book seats for the long trip north, hoping to see us gain what may well be our first away win of the season, if the Master Plan succeeds.

Very disappointing performance. As good as we were against Hemel we were poor yesterday. None of the usual grit and determination we just rolled over, we seriously need to up our league form.
See Pato scored and had an assist on his debut for Welling, wish him the best of luck, but will always question letting him go ☹️
