The Sports Memories (Oxfordshire) Facebook page has just reported the passing of Steve Fontaine. Always popular with the fans and many will remember his match-winning strike against Belper Town that took City to the FA Vase Final where he was also a goalscorer. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP Steve.

Hi guys. I’m trying to find out some statistics, photos and press articles of early 1900’s team. My great grand father was a player for the team and one of the top goal scorers - Guy Buckingham. Are you able to assist with anything relating to his time in the team? Many thanks in advance.

Regarding Guy Buckingham, I wrote a biographical article about him in a club programme in 2010. I’d be happy to send you a copy if you email me on cpcjo@hotmail.co.uk . He played for City between 1912 and 1924, interrupted by the War. In his first two seasons he scored 55 goals in 68 games, then in March 1919 scored 17 goals. Total stat is 129 goals from 173 appearances!

What was staggering about his exploits in March 1919 was that those 17 goals came in the only three matches played in that month: FOUR against the Canadian Air Force; SIX against Oxford University; and then SEVEN against RAOC.

Guy Buckingham also gained an Amateur Cup Final losers medal in the 1912/13 season when City were beaten by South Bank.
