The Vets are back in action on Tuesday night with a friendly at home to Wantage Town, kick-off 7.45PM.
I have freshened up the squad this season with a few new faces. I felt the squad needed a few younger(ish) players, and I've been lucky to sign on some players that have only just turned 35.
Sadly, we have lost the services of last year's Goalkeeper and player of the season, Colin Fleet & also our top goalscorer for the last 2 seasons, Julio Barresi, who have both decided to finally hang up their boots or gloves in Colin's case. We certainly will miss Colin's banter & humour in the dressing room, but won't miss losing a goal to a lob from 40 yards again???. Julio has still signed on, but may decide to start playing again if he begins to miss it. We will certainly miss those White boots Julio??? Paul Spittle will also not be available until mid October, as he is working abroad.
Carl Fisher comes in between the sticks to replace Fleety. Also joining are Andy Cooper from Wantage Town, ex Didcot Town & Wallingford full back Antony Hill, Abingdon Town full back Steve Foote. Another local full back, Darrell Cribben joins the squad having just turned 35. I am also hoping to confirm the signing of ex Wallingford & Didcot midfielder Barry Primmer before Tuesday's friendly. Midfielder Matty Crook also has signed, but is not eligible until December when he turns 35.
Squad: Carl Fisher, Simon Pagano, Antony Hill, Robert Tutton, Andy Cooper, Julian Dark, Justin Lee, Liam Carroll, Steve Foote, Leigh Bastable, Darrell Cribben, Martin Smy, Mark Jennings, Paul Creed, Chris Fontaine, Ronnie Williams, Shaun Bradbury, Mark Orlando, Mike Ford, Justin Merritt, Barry Primmer(?), Matty Crook, Paul Spittle, Dave Southam, Andy Marriott, Wayne Holden, Phil Rodney, Paul Kimber.
Our league campaign starts on the 15th September, and bizarrely we have been given away fixtures for our first 4 league games. They have increased the size of the league this season, as many clubs complained that there was too many weeks gaps between games, so hopefully we will be playing more frequently this season, meaning my boys can keep their finally tuned bodies in match fit shape??? The top 2 teams from Division 1 West & East last season have been promoted up to the Premier division. Joining us this season are Stonesfield, Old Hooky, Chipping Norton Old Boys & Abingdon Town.
Fixtures for September & October are as follows:
Sep 15th - Stonesfield (Away - At Ardley United).
Sep 22nd - Chipping Norton Old Boys (Away).
Sep 29th - Brize Norton (Home) - OFA Veterans Cup Round 1.
Oct 13th - Kidlington (Away).
Oct 20th - Abingdon Town (Away).
Another very important fixture to inform you all is on Sunday 3rd October, when we entertain an Oxford United All Stars team at CPF (Kick-off, 2.30PM) in a benefit match to raise some much needed money for Steve Tavinor & his family. For those of you know who don't know, Steve played for the Vets last season, and early into last season, Steve had an accident at work, and spent months in hospital not knowing whether or not he would lose his leg. After numerous operations, and lots of special treatment, I'm pleased to report that Steve will save his leg. However it is very unlikely that he will work again in the profession that he has always been involved in. The game will hopefully involve some true legends from Oxford United (not forgetting our City Vets legends). After the game there will also be an auction for various memorabilia items. Already confirmed is a signed football or shirt from Fulham, 3 tickets in the Kop for a Liverpool home Premiership fixture, a 4 ball at Waterstock Golf Course & 4 tickets in the Directors box at the Kassam Stadium for a home Oxford United fixture. There will also be a raffle as well. If anybody would kindly like to donate a raffle prize or something for the Auction, then it would be very much appreciated. Please contact myself or Colin Taylor. PLEASE PLEASE try and attend this fixture and spread the news to your friends. More details will be posted on here over the coming weeks, and will hopefully get posters advertising the event out within the next fortnight.
Thanks
