So that was a much better performance. Zac was outstanding, the three amigos midfield dominant, and the back five as a unit worked, they both looked more solid and it seemed to me were more pragmatic as to when to play out from the back. Rylee had a commendable debut and looked calm in possession.
We had enough chances to have been out of sight. One of Chorley's players did say they were looking to target the young keeper so perhaps Ross's close to the chest approach would have been wiser. Despite Chorley being favourites for the play offs, we had looked much the better team for all but short spells. We should have been three or four up by the time the set piece specialists took advantage of a ref who pretty much let everything go, and so effectively bullied the keeper at will. Fair enough but I suspect most refs woukd have given more protection.
Sam was I feel making the right choice to make a sub to try and change the dynamics of the game back in city's favour. It was the right decision just what city needed. Then the ref makes the most atrocious decision at Marsh Lane since Canice had a penalty awarded against him whilst ten yards outside the box. I had only just got over Veltman not being sent off and Rice dismissed in the lunchtime kick off. In both games unacceptable refereeing changes the course of the game. Such decisions undermine the idea that the referee is there to unsure fairness and an appropriate reading of the rules. To be clear, Andrews was walking off the pitch in the same fashion as players do in every team, every week and crucially toward the required side of the pitch.
As a consequence sadly City are bottom of the league and may be somewhat adrift after the international break. It heaps undeserved pressure on Sam and the team. However, this was a decent performance and I can't help but think this may be the start of us turning a corner.
We have however two players now suspended for the FA Cup on the 14th. Let's hope we get a minnow at home and get an uplifting result.
