I'm sure there'll be a comprehensive report along from Clive shortly, but a few thoughts from me.
I'm still not quite sure how City lost the game last night against Alfreton, but somehow they contrived to go to sleep twice in a few second half minutes and allow the very physical Alfreton to turn a one goal deficit into a lead they never relinquished. First, the defence completely went to sleep from a corner to allow the big central defender clear space to deftly flick the ball home. Then Carbon kicked the frigid night air instead of clearing the ball on the edge of the area and the nine nipped in to punish the error. One other shot aside (that the debutante keeper Jonathan Mcaulay saved brilliantly) Alfreton hardly looked a threat. But on a night of lots of huff and puff but mostly disjointed meanderings City rarely threatened - and even Parker's goal was a bit of luck when the defender slipped over attempting a back pass.
My abiding memories of last night were how cold my feet were; a decent Turkey bap with cranberry sauce; and spending the second half surrounded by the new ground sponsor's corporate guests. From the conversation I suspect they were accountants. Not sure what the collective noun is (A spreadsheet of accountants? An abacus?). whatever it is, there wasn't much warmth.
Notably, there's a new centre half in the building, but didn't get off the bench - a bench that was not, for once, warmed by Siddik or Kpekawa. Phil Croker played well, and the not very tall Drewe looks very impressive as a central defender. Those aside, this won't live long in the memory.
