You usually see an entertaining game at CPF with plenty of goals, as City are the third highest scorers in the league, and have the worst defensive record, so more goals have been scored in our matches than in any other team's. Today's was no exception, and most of the entertainment was coming from the home side who played plenty of bright attacking football, particularly in the second half (contrary, I thought, to what Josh Ashby said after the match). It may be that the opposition were poor today, but Farsley created very little of any threat until the last move of the match, and City seemed to be able to slice them open quite easily at times; indeed, we should probably have taken more of the opportunities we created. But it was a good all-round team performance today which was rewarded with much-needed points against a similarly relegation-threatened rival.
It was, in fact, a near-faultless performance apart from a period after the first, very well-taken goal by Corey early on, when for a while we seemed to shrink back into our shells until Josh's deflected shot put us more comfortably ahead. The only blots on the day were the nasty shoulder injury to poor Charlie Stirland who was starting for us for the first time, and the goal conceded at the end as we switched off thirty seconds too soon. Such a shame not to get the clean sheet, and the extra help in the goal difference column.
Zac, who scored a superb individual goal for the fourth, was rightly made MoM but there were many other fine performances today. Tom Scott took his goal well, and the whole midfield seemed to have an energy which could have been lacking after that long midweek trip and tough match at Chester. Aaron Drewe, wearing a protective mask, was masterly in each defensive position and took several opportunities to break forward. Charlie had played well until almost half time, and Jalen looked composed. Jayden was his usual energetic self both on and off the ball. He has been, for me, the revelation this season, and his confidence is growing. All the subs who came on did well, too.
Of course, we won't get too excited as we shall face tougher opponents in the coming weeks, but it felt so good to post our second home league win (at last!), and the pigs in blankets matched the quality of our play!
