The over 40's played their first game of the season last night in the Knock out cup 1st round. After winning this competition last season, a tough tie away to Shrivenham was going to be a challenge, but the boys came away with an excellent performance winning 6-0.
Due to a few late withdrawals, the vets were indebted to 1st team manager Mike Ford for releasing 4 of his first team squad (Paul Kimber, Justin Lee, Julian Dark & Wayne Holden) to make an appearance, and also for Fordy to get his boots out as well. Martin "Specky" Smy also made his first appearance in vets football.
After a tight start to the game, the first goal came after 15 minutes, as a corner was cleared to Julian Dark who then looked up and picked a pinpoint cross to Wayne Holden, who finished clinically from 10 yards.
This goal seemed to really get City into the groove, and a second goal came only minutes later, as neat interchange play from Barry Primmer & Paul Kimber lead to the latter squaring for Mike "Bobby" Ford to compose himself and slot into the corner.
The 3rd goal came on 27 minutes, as Ford picked up the ball on the half-way line, and went on a mazy run which took him past not 1, not 2 but 3 defenders, until the 4th decided to stop him in his tracks just as he was going to score. Cry's were going round the ground of "Red card" (well it was only Fordy actually?), but it was only Yellow. Some were saying the run was reminiscent of John Barnes goal for England at the Maracana against Brazil in 1985. Wayne Holden stepped up and slotted home the penalty for his second.
Number 4 came after 35 minutes when Holden received the ball in the box, did a Johan Cruyff turn, and was brought down by the same player that brought Fordy down for the earlier penalty. Holden picked himself up, and duly converted the spot kick for his hat-trick.
49 Mins and it was 5-0 with probably the best goal of the game. Paul Creed went on another one of his surging runs down the right wing, played a lovely ball inside to Holden, who looked up and picked out Mike Ford at the far post who planted a lovely header into the bottom corner for his second goal (YES, 2 for Fordy?). Would have been a hat-trick if his earlier effort a few minutes earlier wasn't ruled out for off-side.
The final goal came via another lovely flowing move from the Old boys, as Martin "Specky" Smy put a defense splitting pass through to Holden, who in turn drilled in a near post cross for Paul Kimber to poke home with his little toe.
A few beers in the bar afterwards, and then a get together at McDonalds on the way home was richly deserved (thanks for the grub Shrivenham???).
Thanks to all our loyal supporters again for coming all the way to Shrivenham on a cold wet night for your support. Tav, you were different class, and Shrivenham's bar bill did record sales for a Vets match, which means they will be able to lay on food for the next game now. Has anybody seen Bas on his bike down the A420, as he didn't show?
FINAL SCORE: Shrivenham 0 Oxford City 6
