The Over 40's made it through to the final of the knockout cup last night with a convincing 3-1 win away to Wantage Town. This kept City's 100% win record in tact, and a win in the final will complete the treble to a fantastic season.
City started the brightest, and an opportunist individual goal from Paul Spittle after only 8 minutes deservedly put City 1-0 up. As a long diagonal ball was played over the back four, Spits flicked the ball up over the on rushing defender, and volleyed into the top corner for 1 of the goals of the season. City then took their foot of the pedal, and Wantage came more into the game, and it was no surprise when Wantage grabbed the equalizer just before half-time, as defender Andy Wallbridge was left unmarked from a corner to power his header home.
HALF-TIME: Wantage Town 1 Oxford City 1
A few stern words (which can't be repeated on here) from Manager Wayne Holden at half-time did the trick, as City completely dominated the 2nd half from start to finish. The only surprise was that the second goal took 15 minutes to arrive. Mike Ford's excellent though ball was once again brilliantly finished by Paul Spittle with an exquisite lob over the onrushing keeper.
The 3rd goal then arrived only minutes later, as Paul Kimber's delicate cross (which most of us still say was a shot???) was coolly tucked away by the impressive Man of the match Mike Ford (He's not my mate Creedy, Honest?). In the dying minutes Justin Lee almost made it 4-1 with his first goal for 28 years (Chalgrove under 9's), as his really good effort from 5 yards with his standing foot sailed over the bar after good work from best mates Wayne Holden & Mike Ford.
FULL-TIME: Wantage Town 1 Oxford City 3
GOALSCORERS: Paul Spittle (2), Mike Ford.
Just like to apologise to Fish for having a go at you at half-time. Don't do anything stupid mate. It's only a game of Football. Also Tut if you are reading this, please come back, Fordy says he is sorry for shouting at you last week.
Team: Carl Fisher, Paul Creed, Mark Orlando, Julian Dark, Andy Cooper, Shaun Pearce, Mike Ford, Justin Lee, Paul Kimber, Paul Spittle, Dave Southam. Subs: Barry Primmer, Wayne Holden.
The final is in a fortnight's time on Wednesday 11th May, and is a repeat of last year's final against Chinnor to be held once again at Abingdon Town.
