Oxford City Colts U13 Match Report
24th January 2010
Oxford City Colts 1 – Bloxham 8
Amazingly the twice postponed Oxford Mail Boys League Cup match against Bloxham was City’s first competitive fixture since November. Perhaps not ideal opponents for the boys first match for nearly two months; the visitors challenging for league championship honours and currently two leagues above City.
On a heavy pitch Bloxham immediately looked the stronger side with City understandably nervous. The visitors were allowed too long on the ball and with their greater speed and determination it came as no surprise when they opened the scoring after five minutes. A second followed soon after and it was only then that City started to settle and compete for the ball. But such was the strength of some of the Bloxham team that further goals were inevitable and before long City were struggling. By half time the score had reached 0-6 and City were facing their heaviest defeat of the season.
A strong half time team talk asked for more commitment and pride and to their credit City appeared far less intimidated as the second half began. Tyler Walker and Joe Roberson ran tirelessly in centre midfield and gave the Bloxham team far less time on the ball. In defence Brian Muinami tackled and cleared impressively on a number of occasions and in goal Joe Russell had a great deal to do but, unlike the first half, the determination of the City defence denied Bloxham a further goal until well into the half.
Despite a seven-goal deficit, City then played their best football of the match and passed the ball well down both flanks. Their reward came when Jack Kent rifled a shot into the top corner of the Bloxham net for a well-earned consolation goal. In the dying seconds Bloxham added another goal which was perhaps a little disappointing for the City side who had competed well in the second period.
So despite the result, City can feel proud that, in the second half at least, they performed well against a very strong A-league side. Hopefully if they display the same determination throughout the rest of the season the league performances will be significantly more successful. Thanks to Clive for organising much of the game and to Mike Dennis for running the line.
Team: J Russell, T Homer, L Williams, A Martin, B Muinami, B Tombs, J Roberson, T Walker, D Dennis, P McKenna, J Kent. Subs B Proper, A Ball
