Not a bad result, though City probably deserved more. If we don't win the league this season--and after today's results, that is looking unlikely--the reason will probably be our results against the other top teams. We've done very well against the mid-table sides, but only five points from nine games against the rest of the top six is not a convincing return, and we have just one such match left now to improve on that.
To give Cambridge credit, they did defend well and were hard to break down. City had about 60% of the possession and certainly caused the opposition more anxious moments than they caused us, but the ball just didn't fall kindly for us in their area and shots were blocked or just off target. The sending off was absolutely right--Felipe was just bearing down on their goal and it was a cynical attempt to stop him.
I thought our best player today was Declan Benjamin who battled really well, especially in the second half, and had some good runs. Mark Bell didn't have long but it was good to see he still has the speed to worry defences. And our defence was again solid--that's four clean sheets in a row now and few chances being given away in the 90 minutes. Ballard was a Trojan as ever, and we also managed to get to the byeline a few times late on. So overall, a good performance, and that without Pond, Clarke and Malone.
Finally, it was nice to see the turnstiles being used for the first time in a City match today, but are they accurate?--I did a quick headcount in the first half and there's no way there were more than 300 there then!
