Oxford City Vets got their season off to a great start with a hard fought 3 - 2 victory over Shrivenham on Wednesday night. City have had some real battles over the last couple of seasons with Shrivenham, so the management team were delighted to take 3 points off last season's runners up.
Despite missing last season's managers player of the year (Lee Sharkey), City fielded a strong squad and they got out of the traps early.
City were magnificent for the first half an hour and really could of been 4 - 0 up. Rob 'The Cords' Tutton crashed a header against the bar from a Shilton free kick and no one could get on a cross when the goal was gaping, after great work from Craig Door, down the right hand side.
City got their noses in front after a thunderbolt free kick from new signing, Matty Shilton, and soon followed it up with a second as Shriv neeted an OG after great work from the midfiled general Clarky.
With everything looking rosy and the gaffa ready to pat the boys on the back at half time, City took their foot of the gas and paid the price.. Shrivenham were gifted two quick goals after some sloppy defensive work, and honours were even at half time!!
Creedy delivered a Churchill like speech at half time (Not the 'Oh Yes' Churchill by the way) and the second half was away. This became a real battle and the boys had to dig deep, as changes were made.
Shrivenham had the better of the half but City were starting to look dangerous on the break.. Julian Dark went closent with a sweet left foot curler, which was destined for the top corner until the keeper turned it around the post. The gaffa then introduced his secret 'David Fairclough' and didn't have to wait long for it too pay off. Sholden broke free of the centre half at the Rory Barrett Tea Hut end and delivered a clinical finish off the left hand post to make it 3 -2.
With five minutes remaining this should of been game done but there was still time for one scare.. In the last minute Shrivenham broke clear and would of equalised but for the reflexes of Sid the Cat who pulled off a great save to ensure City took all three points.
Final Score City 3 - Shrivenham 2.
Man of the match; Stuart Clark Attendance 13 (No Bas or Tavinor)
Worst shoes of the night; Wayne Sherbert
Next fixture - Away to Goring at Milton Wednesday 19th September.
