Last(?) puzzle.......... The days of 'works' teams are probably long gone, but which three 'works' sides from Oxfordshire have City faced in the FA Cup? Pressed Steel 1950-51 won Morris Motors (1937/38) and N.A.C(Banbury) (1949/50): both matches won. Anyway, back to the present, and good luck for tomorrow...COYHs (better than COY(fluorescent greens)?)

I see the National League website 'preview' reckons City have never reached the Second Round!!! (Swansea Town 69/70) Anyway, that's quite some time ago - certainly before any of Saturday's players were born - so let's hope they can make it past Round One this year.

See you chaps in the ground...and coach afterwards!
Anyone else making their own way there and going into Colchester town centre? Not looking forward to the early start, long long Central Line Tube to Newbury Park (who remembers Redbridge away?)then bus then train...but am looking forward to a few ales in the decent pubs there!
No packed lunches...pleeease! ๐

FANTASTIC RESULT...been following on Gillette Soccer Saturday/Twitter etc. A quick look at the results suggests Maidstone and Boreham Wood (with a really late goal from ex-City man Dan Holman) were the only other NL sides to defeat League opposition.

Didn't see that result coming - good job I forgot to enter my prediction !!
Slough at home in the next round ? Or someone like Blackburn/Coventry/Charlton ? Or someone fairly local eg Swindon or Wycombe ?

Many congratulations, you deserved that. We were shocking all over and an alien would have struggled to pick the out the league and non league team. You wanted it more than us and we lacked any spark of creativity or imagination to break you down. Good luck in the draw. I hope you get a home tie that attracts the TV cameras.

Fantastic performance all round, still haven't stopped buzzing!
Defensively we were magnificent, threw our bodies on the line till the last seconds. Midfield battled for everything and in Matt Paterson we have striker who really should be playing at a much higher level, he is deadly and was unlucky not to have had more than one goal. Special mention to Sinclair who I thought was a real thorn in the side throughout the match, brilliant.
Hugely enjoyable day out, now who do we all want in the second round of the FA Cup?

Thanks Colufan--your supporters were very gracious in defeat,as many stayed behind to clap us off the pitch. Nice touch, that.
I'm sure you can play a lot better and I daresay nine times out of ten you'd beat us, but the cup often produces the tenth time and I think, despite what it said in the match programme, you might have just underestimated us a bit?
Anyway, the Glow-in-the dark Hoops certainly shone today. They were completely magnificent, all of them, and deserve their place in the history book as the first City team to beat League opposition in the Cup. They made all of their supporters very proud.

Dear Shutler--please keep quiet about Paterson or some League outfit will come and poach him!(And the same goes for Sinclair.)

As for the next round, I wouldn't fancy Gateshead away. Shrewsbury and Rochdale away could also be uninviting. In theory a tie with the Leatherhead/Billericay winners might give us the best chance but with City it probably wouldn't work like that (we remember Redbridge et al.). Slough just thrashed a team at our level so they must be buzzing. That would be quite a low attendance too I guess. Getting someone big like Swindon or Luton might help the coffers away (or draw TV cameras to Court Place Farm), and it would be sweet to go to Port Vale and win... but my personal favourite would be Charlton.

Well, we've waited 115 years for this (giant-killer status!), so let's make the most of it. The most fantastic City performance I have seen in 60 years. As the home report acknowledged it was difficult to see which was the league team and which the non-league outfit. The City players fought for every ball, and kept out the Colchester attackers every time. We were given every courtesy by their staff and stewards, and even had a Sky Sports screen to ourselves in the away stand refreshment area. Prices were very reasonable, I thought. Roll on Monday night's draw; please not Slough! I see we have four consecutive away league games coming up; more opportunities for the luminous green shirts!

Amazing day! What a result, a deserved one too. Everyone played so well and standed up and counted for. Defence were solid, Midfield did there jobs and Paterson led the line well. The fans were amazing, singing throughout. It was bloody nervy towards the end, i felt sick again, but when that final whistle went elation all around. We witnessed history, it will go down in history and the players are now club legends. Still overwhelmed! The club deserves this moment in the spotlight, for it has gone through. 2017. OCFC History makers. Well done one and all.

Right, having written what I hope was a very balanced report I now get to say what I really think.
That was magnificent. I'm hesitant to say we were brilliant but I don't think I can avoid it - we held our own against a professional side to the point where it was hard to tell the difference. The only sign that they were the bigger club was our willingness to put 11 men behind the ball and defend that lead rather than risk any big push for the second which, in knockout football, is something that any side would probably be willing to do.
We can't escape the fact that Colchester were hilariously wasteful in front of goal, both lads up front had a couple of bad misses and Stevens only ended up with one meaningful save to make. However, a lot of that wastefulness was born of stout defending which forced them into a lot of shots from range early on, and in those final 20 minutes saw every effort blocked before it had really left the player's boot.
It was interesting to see players like Sinclair and Pearce so eager to shoot early on but once they settled and began playing their normal game the whole midfield started to look incredibly threatening. I think they expected us to try and bully them but what they got instead was Zac running past players for fun, Sinclair beating three of them at a time, and both of them playing smart passes in the final third to make the most of the movement around them. Poku and Fofana holding firm in the middle allowed all of that creative play to happen while Oastler in particular was on fire at the back.
Once we got the goal the whole team put everything on the line to hold that lead. As nervy as it all felt for us, you have to imagine that Colchester fans will have been wondering where a goal was going to come from. Freddie in particular came up big with that sliding block in stoppage time and we even managed to get forward to make those closing moments a bit more comfortable.
I feel really lucky to have been one of fewer than 200 people who got to be part of yesterday. I'm not exactly a long-time fan and I'm only just past the point of calling City my 'main' team, but when everybody gets together for a big occasion its absolutely unbeatable. Back in 2008 I was right behind the goal at Kenilworth Road when Dave Edwards forced John Arne Risse to put through his own net to earn Luton a 3rd round replay at Anfield and I thought that was as good as the FA Cup got. I was wrong. That full time whistle was the single greatest release of energy and emotion I've ever known and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Thanks so much for that great report, TooC4S. Iโm starting to believe this match really happened! As the owner of a Colchester Utd shirt, I have never been happier for my old home team to lose. Despite my numerous children and distance from Marsh Lane (Iโm now in Cheshire), I will drop everything to get to Round 2.. although a draw away against Crewe would be very handy.
